
The Baccile Laboratory is housed in Dabney-Buehler Hall at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
We develop chemical tools to understand how isoprenoid metabolism controls biology across organisms, from bacteria to human cells. Our research focuses on the universal five-carbon metabolites isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP) and dimethylallyl pyrophosphate (DMAPP), combining synthetic chemistry, chemical biology, analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, microbiology, and cell biology to develop new approaches for manipulating, tracing, and visualizing metabolism in living systems. By integrating these multidisciplinary approaches, we address questions in bacterial physiology, mammalian cell biology, and natural product biosynthesis that have previously been inaccessible through conventional genetic and biochemical methods.
